Malaysian diver makes history at Diving World Grand Prix

When we mention diving, names like Pandelela Rinong, Leong Mun Yee and Cheong Jun Hoong come to mind, but now, it looks like we have another diving star in the mix.

On Saturday, Wendy Ng created history by becoming only the third Malaysian to win a gold medal in an individual event at the Diving World Grand Prix.

According to The New Straits Times, the 23-year-old beat two Chinese divers in the women’s 3m springboard individual event in the Kuching leg of the Diving World Grand Prix.

Wendy posted a five-dive total of 338.25 points, scoring more than enough points to clinch the gold medal ahead of China’s Wang Han (333.60 points) and bronze medallist Huang Xiaohui (322.30 points).

“I am delighted to finally win an individual title in the World GP.

“It will spur me to train harder and also give me the self-belief that I can take on the best divers in the world,” she was quoted by the daily as saying.

Wendy now joins Pandelela – who won the gold medal in the women’s 10m platform at the Montreal leg in 2012 – and Jun Hoong – gold medal winner in the 3m springboard at the Singapore leg in 2014 – as the only Malaysians to ever win gold at a Diving World Grand Prix event.

Congratulations Wendy; we are extremely proud of you!
