‘Accidental Malaysian millionaire’ pleads not guilty to fraud charges

Hey, remember that Malaysian student who allegedly spent millions that didn’t belong to her? Well, she’s back in the news again.

Christine Lee Jia Xin, 21, pleaded not guilty to fraud charges on Tuesday.

According to a report by Australia’s Daily Mail, the mechanical engineering student turned up at the Downing Centre Court in Sydney wearing a pair of ripped jeans, a cap and white canvas shoes.

Lee’s lawyer, Hugo Aston, told the news portal that they would be “vigorously defending the charges of dishonestly obtaining financial advantage by deception and knowingly dealing with the proceeds of crime”.

Aston added that they are confident that Lee will be acquitted.

Daily Mail Australia also reported that Lee’s parents are now currently in Sydney to provide her with moral support, but they weren’t present in court.

Lee plans on returning to Malaysia once her court ordeal is over, according to the news portal.

Back in August 2012, just a month shy of her 18th birthday, Lee was mistakenly given a A$4.6mil (RM13.8mil) unlimited overdraft by Westpac bank.

After becoming a millionaire overnight, she reportedly went on a massive shopping spree, allegedly spending RM15.2 million on designer handbags, clothes and shoes.

Despite numerous attempts by the bank and the police to contact her, she reportedly ignored their calls and emails.

Lee was arrested at the Sydney Airport back as she was trying to board a flight back to Malaysia on May 6.

She had previously claimed that she thought the money was deposited into her account by her parents.
