ICYMI: Coconuts KL stories that you loved in November

We get that some of you may have a truckload of work to do instead of just browsing our Facebook page all day, so here’s an easy, digestible round-up just for you: the six Coconuts KL stories that became your favourites in November.

1. “A taxi driver beat me up in front of KLCC and nobody helped”:
One September evening, a female expatriate from India and her friends decided to go looking for a cab in the heart of the city. An argument with a cabbie over his refusal to use a meter escalated and quickly became violent. Kavya Kriti, 23, narrated her story to Coconuts KL.

2. Khairy Jamaluddin pairs a batik shirt with Doc Martens, brings infinite swag to government:
We wrote about KJ’s interesting sense of style and it became a runaway hit. You just have to see for yourselves (again)!

3. Possibly the five dumbest Malaysian criminals to make the news
Stories of spectacularly failed criminals can be funny.

4. Indian expat praised for standing up against bully cab drivers
Because Kavya Kriti’s story (see No. 1) was just too outrageous to pass, we spoke to women’s groups who had this to say: “Unacceptable behaviour.   Behaving like gangsters.  What have we become as a society?”

5. Al Jazeera reporter exposes horrendous conditions at Malaysian refugee centres
A 101 East documentary showed Al Jazeera’s senior presenter and reporter Steve Chao posing as a priest in order to unearth depressing stories of trapped refugees after his many requests to enter these facilities as a journalist were declined.

6. PHOTO FEATURE: Outside its locked gates, daily assemblies to save Vivekananda Ashram
We visited the iconic 110-year-old Vivekananda Ashram in Brickfields – now at the centre of a debate on whether to allow a 23-storey tower to loom over it — to discover that despite it having been locked for months, people still wait outside its gates daily to generate support.
