Almost 500 dirty eateries ordered to close last year, says DBKL

Close to 500 food outlets in Kuala Lumpur were told to stop operations temporarily for failing hygiene checks last year.

Definitely not great news for a country that has — and aspires to keep — a reputation as a food paradise. Aside from that, a total of 1,938 compounds were issued to food handlers by the KL City Hall (DBKL) in 2014.

“Food handlers received the most compounds covering offences such as not having a licence, no typhoid injection and not wearing aprons. Of 100 samples of food poisoning cases analysed last year, 25 were found to have flouted the Food Act 1983,” KL Mayor Datuk Seri Ahmad Phesal Talib told Bernama.

He added that DBKL has made it compulsory for grease traps to be installed at all business premises for a more efficient and effective way of disposing cooking oil.

“A total of 89 grease traps covering 21 DBKL hawker centres have been installed to date and 44 more are planned for installations,” he was quoted as saying.

Meanwhile, if you’ve seen a dirty food outlet, get the tip-off to DBKL. Send them a text message. More details here.
