A representative of the Kedah state government has tried to tamp down the outrage surrounding allegations that a senior teacher at a Sungai Petani primary school told non-Muslim students to “drink their own urine” in the toilet instead of drinking water in front of their fasting Muslim schoolmates.
Tajul Urus Mat Zain, state assemblyman for Tanjong Dawai (where the school is located), and who is coindentally also the Kedah state councillor in charge of education, said the teacher was merely reminding Muslim students of their religious obligation to fast during Ramadan, and for non-Muslim students to avoid drinking in front of their fasting friends.
The line about “drinking your own urine”, apparently, was a joke told to the Sunday morning school assembly.
Um. Not funny? At all?
According to The Malay Mail Online‘s Melissa Chi, Tajul explained that the offending teacher had told his students to ask for permission to leave the class if they wanted to drink water during the fasting month, and that they could also drink the tap water in the school’s toilets … as long as they “didn’t drink their own urine”.
“The speech and message was misunderstood by some of the students and became an issue. A police report has been done by the parents,” Tajul said in a statement.
Apparently, the school had a special assembly today to “correct” the teacher’s grossly unfunny joke about drinking urine.
Tajul also said the teacher had received threatening phone calls over the issue, and has taken to lodging a police report against them.
Gee, maybe not make dumb jokes about drinking weewee juice to a bunch of primary school students. We’re sure their parents would love to not have to call a teacher to scream at him.
