Penang Mufti wants govt to declare Pokemon Go ‘haram’

Boy, for a game that is yet to release in Malaysia, it sure is generating a lot of drama.

After a local preacher claimed last week that the hugely popular Pokemon Go is dangerous and goes against the teachings of Islam, Penang Mufti Wan Salim Wan Mohd Noor is the latest religious figure to call for a ban on the game.

According to a report by Sinar Harian, as translated by Free Malaysia Today, Wan Salim has urged the government to declare the game ‘haram’ with immediate effect.

Wan Salim told the daily that a study by the mufti’s department has revealed that the negatives of the game outweighed the positives.

“Therefore, we hope the National Fatwa Council will ban the game as soon as possible,” he was quoted by Sinar Harian as saying.

He added that banning the game will be in the name of maintaining public welfare, as well as avoiding harm.

This came after Communications and Multimedia Minister Datuk Seri Dr Salleh Said Keruak said earlier this week that the government will neither object nor restrict the free-to-play game from releasing in Malaysia.
