Coconuts Hot Spot: Udon madness at Manmaru

COCONUTS HOT SPOT — The proper way to eat udon is to slurp the entire strand in one go into your mouth without breaking it.  In Manmaru, this may prove to be quite a feat.  That’s because Manmaru’s udon is made from scratch in their premise and each strand is exactly 2 feet long.

Two.Feet.Long.

Using only the finest premium flour, the strands of udon are rolled out from their state-of-the-art machinery imported from Japan.  The fresh springiness in the texture of Manmaru udon is what makes it so different from the commercially-produced ones.

Each serving is cooked a la minute upon order.  At Manmaru, there’s a host of broths, condiments and toppings to go with the udon.

For the purists, the best ways to enjoy Manmaru udon is to have it “naked”, the “kamaage” way. Kamaage Udon (RM12.90) – savour al dente udon goodness with warm kamaage sauce and experience its unadulterated flavour.

Udon is traditionally cooked in savoury broths. For soup lovers, nothing beats slurping those noodles from bowls of flavourful broth.  My favourite soupy udon in Manmaru is their Signature Supreme Udon (RM28.90).  The creamy milky broth is full of umami goodness, thanks to the addition of prawns, scallops and sliced shellfish.

Not to be missed are the Kuruma Ebi UdonSupreme Seafood Udon (RM24.90) with soft boiled egg and king prawn and the Kamo Nanban Udon (RM15.90) – hot udon soup with smoked duck breast and Japanese leeks.

Another crowd pleaser is their Asari Seafood Nabe Udon (RM18.90) – claypot seafood soup with succulent asari clams.

If soupy udons are not your thing, there are several modernistic stir-fry options and these aren’t any less delicious, believe me.  In fact, cooked this way, some may find the udon absorbs the flavours better, resulting in more intense tastes.

Soft Shell Crabs Sesame Udon (RM18.90) smothered in a thick creamy tasty sauce – really good!

Ishiyaki Eringi Udon (RM18.90) stir-fried assorted mushrooms with udon in hot stone bowl.  This may seem like a simple dish but the earthy sweetness of the mushrooms marries well with the smooth udon.

Besides their signature udons, Manmaru’s menu lists an extensive range of Japanese favourites.  In fact, the choices are quite mind-boggling. There’s a whole long list on the menu ranging from appetizers, side dishes to desserts.

However, the udons are the stars, so be sure to grab a bowl or two the next time you are in Mega Mall!
