Emergency lane abusers will be hauled straight to court

Gone are the days where you can pay a paltry fine of RM300 to get off the hook for using the emergency lane.

Road Transport Department (JPJ) enforcement director Datuk Valluvan Veloo told theSun that from now on, drivers who are caught abusing the emergency lane will be hauled straight to court.

This no-nonsense approach, according to Valluvan, was an attempt to change drivers’ attitudes.

“A fraction of drivers frequently misuse the emergency lane, so much so that it has become a habit already. We had to do something to prevent this from becoming mainstream.

“Since May, all drivers who are caught abusing the emergency lane by JPJ or reported by the public will be brought straight to court,” he was quoted as saying.

The JPJ is taking the offence very seriously after an ambulance responding to an accident on the North-South Expressway near Malacca on May 22 was severely delayed as the emergency lane was blocked by selfish drivers, resulting in the accident victim dying.

After the incident, a total of 91 drivers who reportedly blocked the emergency lane were identified, and seven of them will be charged in court.
