Seven out of 91 motorists who used emergency lane to be charged

Seven out of the 91 vehicle owners identified using the emergency lane at the North-South Expressway last month have given their statements to the Road Transport Department (JPJ).

Bernama reports that they will be charged in court, while enforcement action proceeds against the rest.

Its director-general Ismail Ahmad was quoted as saying that the department would not offer any compromise to those caught illegally using the emergency lane.

“Previously, we imposed a fine of RM300 for the offence but found that the fine was too low to give any effect to the offenders. To show the severity of the matter, we have taken legal action that will enable them to be imposed a maximum fine of RM2,000 or jail for a year,” he reportedly said.

Last month, the department issued notices to 91 vehicle owners after they were found to have used the emergency lane and blocked an ambulance rushing to the scene of an accident recently.
